Trishanku's Journey to Heaven

"Shatanand, the royal priest of Mithila continued, "At that time there was a king in Ikshwaku descendant whose name was Trishanku. He was willing to go to heaven along with his body, hence he requested Vasishtha to perform a "Yajna" to fulfill his desire. Vasishtha said that he did not have that much ability to sand a man to heaven with his body. Trishanku then went to the sons of Vasishtha who were observing atrocious penance in South province and put his request to them. The sons of Vasishtha said to him that you are a stupid. You are willing to do us the task which is impossible for our father. It appears that you have come here to insult our father. In reply of their words Trishanku abused them. Angry sons of Vasishtha cursed Trishanku to be a "Chandal" (a low quality person having no any dignity and hated by others).

"Due to the curse the handsome body of Trishanku became black. His head's hair became small and harsh. There came a garland of bones in his neck and iron ornaments in his hands and legs. All his ministers and knights went away leaving him alone. Trishanku did not abandon his desire to go the heaven with his body. He went to Vishwamitra and praised him much and requested him to fulfill his desire. Vishwamitra assured him that, as he is his retainer, he will definitely fulfill his desire. Vishwamitra called his sons, who were performing penance in South province with their wives, and instructed them to make preparations for sacrifice. He then Ordered his disciples to invite all the Rishi and Munis of South province including the sons of Vasishtha to participate in the sacrifice.

"The disciples told Vishwamitra that all the Rishi and Munis accepted the invitation but the sons of Vasishtha rejected saying that we can not participate in a sacrifice which is performed by a "Kshatriya" (instead of a Brahman) for a "Chandal". Vishwamitra treated it as his unreasonable insult and cursed all the sons of Vasishtha to become "Chandals", go to the hell, remain bounded with "Kalpash", become ugly and get meat of dogs only to eat for next seven hundred years. Then he got busy for sacrifice."

Satanand continued, "Hey Ram! All the Rishis and Munis participated inViswamitra's veneration due to fear of his curse as they had already seen the result of sons of Vasishtha. At the end of the immolation Viswamitra invoked each god but no god accepted his offerings. Then fierce Viswamitra forced Trishanku to to to heaven with his body applying his strength of penance and Trishanku went to heaven. Seeing Trishanku in heaven, Indra darted him to the Earth saying that he has been cursed by his Guru and, therefore, can not stay in heaven. Trishanku began to fall to the Earth with his body up side down. He prayed Vishwamitra to save him. Considering his prayer, Vishwamitra, with the help of the power of his penance, formed another heaven at the location of Trishanku. Then he thought to create a new Indra. All the fearing gods including Indra began to apologizing saying that that they returned Trishanku as he was cursed by his Guru and could not live in heaven.

"Vishwamitra said to Indra that, as he has promised Trishanku to send him to the heaven, the heaven created by him will remain forever and Trishanku will be king there. Satisfied with the words of Vishwamitra, Indra and gods went to there places."

Former Charector of Rishi Vishwamitra (2)

"On getting permission from Vashishtha, Kamdhenu produced a huge army of mighty mighty warriors, who began to kill the enemies just like chopping of carrots and radishes. On destruction of Vishwamitra's army, his irritated one hundred sons pounced at Vasishtha to kill him. Rishi Vasishtha calcined all the sons of Vishwamitra ecxept one.

"Seeing his army and sons dead, Viswamitra felt very sorrow. He handed-over his kingdom to his remaining son and went to caves in Himalayas for penance. Lord Shiva delighted with the harsh austerity of Visha mitra and provided him divine powers and entire archery as boon.

"After receiving the knowledge of the entire archery, Viswamitra went to the Ashram of Vasishtha with revengeful attitude. challenging Vasishtha, he shooted "Agniban" (fire arrow, tornedo). The whole Ashram began to burn. The resident of Ashram scared and began to run away. Vasishtha also got ready with bow and said that I accept your challenge, you are free to do what can you do. I will beat your pride today and tell you that strength of Brahman is superior than the strength of Kshatriya.

"Indignant Viswamitra shooted one after on the "Agneyastra", "Varunastra", "Rudrastra", "Aindrastra" and "Pashuptastra" (types of weapons) which were destroyed by Rishi Vasishthat in betweentheir way. As a result Viswamitra became more angry and used all type of weapons like "Manav", "Mohan", "Gandharv", "Joombhan", "Daran", "Vajra", "Brahmapash", "Kalpash", "Varunpash", "Pinak", "Dand", "Paishach", "Kraunch", "Dharmachakra", "Vishnuchakra", "Vayavya", "Manthan", "Kankal", "Moosal", "Vidyadhar", "Kalastra" etc. Vasishtha destructed all the weapons used by Vishwamitra and got prepared to use "Brahamastra" (great weapon of Lord Brahma). "Devas" (gods), "Yakshas" (demi-gods), "Kinnaras" etc. were afraid and requested Vasishtha not to use "Brahmastra". But wrathful Vasishtha applied the "Brahamastra". Due to the luminosity and deafening thunder of "Brahmastra", the whole world began suffering from the terrible pain. All the Rishis and Munis prayed to Vasishtha that you have defeated Vishwamitra. Now kindly calm the flames created by "Brahmastra". Considering their requested Vasishtha took back the "Brahmastra" and calmed it with "Mantras" (holy verses).

"Defeated and eclipsed Vishwamitra sat down down on the ground and thought that undoubtedly strength of Brahman is best. Now I will get designation of Brahman by performing penance.

"Then Vishwamitra went toward south direction with his wife and there he performed mortal penance. Pleased with his austerity, Lord Brahma alloted him the designation of "Rajarshi" (Rishi of kings). Even getting this designation, he was sad as he could not get the designation of "Brahmarshi" (Rishi of Brahman). He thought that my penance is still incomplete, I must perform atrocious penance once again."

Former Charector of Rishi Vishwamitra (1)

Shatanand, the royal priest of Mithilapuri, was particularly impressed by Ram. He said to Ram, "Hey Ram! It is your great luck that you have got Rishi Vishwamitra as your Guru (teacher). Rishi Viswamitra is a great person. In fact Vishwamitra is very stunning and glorious. Before accepting Rishi religion he was a big and powerful king. Kush was the son of Prajapati, Kushnabh was the sone of Kush and Gadhi was the son of Kushnabh. All of them were pious, warriors and powerful. Viswamitra is the son of Gadhi.

"One day king Viswamitra went to the Ashram of Rishi Vasishtha with his army. At that time Vasishtha was performing sacrifice. He was rapt in devotion to God. After providing proper respect to Vasishtha, Vishwamitra sat there. After completion of the sacrifice, Vasishtha appropriately venerated Viswamitra and requested to accept his hospitality. Thinking that there will much inconvenience to Rishi Vasishtha in entertaining him because he was having his army, Viswamitra asked to go with modesty. But considering repeated request of Vasishtha, Vishwamitra accepted his hospitality for a few days.

"Vasishtha invoked the cow Kamdhenu and requested her to arrange for six types of dishes and all kinds of easements to facilitate the joy for Vishwamitra and his army. Accepting his request the cow Kamdhenu made all the arrangements. Vishwamitra and his army satisfied very much with the hospitality of Rishi Vasishtha.

"Impressed with the miracle of the cow Kamdhenu and with the idea to get the same, Viswamitra said to Vasistha that the cow like Kamdhenu should be the property of the king instead of the person residing in forest. So, you please give it to me. I will give you hundreds of gold currencies in return. Vasishtha replied to him that this cow is my life and at any costI can not give her to anybody.

"Hearing the words of Vasishtha, king Vishwamitra ordered his army to forcely capture the cow and his soldiers began to drive the cow by beating her. Streamed Kamdhenu rescued herself from the bond of the soldiers, came to Vasishtha and began to wail. Rishi Vasishtha said that O Kamdhenu! This king has huge forces, so I can not achieve victory. Even I can not curse him as he is my guest. I am feeling myself in compulsion. Listening these words Kamdhenu said that Hey Bramharshi (great Brahman Rishi)! Strength of Kshatriya can never be more powerful than the strength of Brahmin. Just permit me, I will destroy this king with his huge army in a moment. As there was no any other measure, Vasishtha allowed Kamdhenu to do so.

Story of Ahalya

Next morning Ram and Lakshman along with Rishi Viswamitra went to see the forests, park, etc. of Mithilapuri. In a park, they saw a desolate place. Ram said, "Sir! This place looks like an Ashram but there do not appear any Rishi or Muni (sage). What is the reason behind it?"

Viswamitra told, "At a time this place was Ashram of Mahatma (great person) Gautam. He used to live and observe "Tapasya" (mortification) here with his wife Ahalaya. One day when Rishi Gautam had gone out, Indra impersonated himself as Gautam and courted with Ahalya here in absence of Rishi Gautam. Ahalaya recognized Indra and thought that I am so beautiful that Indra, king of gods, is asking for my courtship. She accepted his address granted her approval. Rishi Gautam came back while Indra was leaving his Ashram and saw impersonated Indra. He understood all the matter and cursed Indra. He then cursed his wife saying that as you are abondened, you will lye here in ashes with pain and having only air as food for thousands of years. You will get redemption and your original body only when Ram will enter this forest. After cursing her Gautam left the Ashram and went to Himalayas to obsrve penance. So Ram! Now you go inside the ashram and provide Ahalya his original body."

As instructed by Vishwamitra both the brothers entered the ashram. Abiding Ahalya was invisible there but the whole atmosphere was brightening with her glory. As soon as Ram entered there and Ahalya saw him, she got back her beautiful body again. Ram and Lakshman respected her with devotion by touching her feet. After accepting her hospitality, all of them came back to the place of stay in Mithilapuri.

Arrival at Janakpur

Next day morning Rishi Viswamitra along with his congregation started their journey for Mithilahapuri. They reached to Vishala Nagri where the stunning temples and huge buildings were making the city charming. Big shops and people having valuable ornaments were revealing the city's prosperity. Wide and clean streets were determining that the internal housekeeping, service system and management tof the city were highly commendable.

Crossing Visahla Nagri the community of Rishi Viswamitra reached to Janakpur. In Janakpur a "Yajnashala" (sacrifice cell) was built in the outer area of the city where Brahmins from various provinces were reciting the "Mantras" (verses) of the Vedas melodiously. Seeing the pretty exciting sacrifice cell, Ram said, "Hey Gurudeva! The grandeur of "Yajnashala" and pleasing obsession of the Brahmins and scholars are making me blithe heart. Kindly arrange for our stay near the "Yajnashala" so that the sound of obsession of the Vedas keep our mind and heart sacred."

On getting information about arrival of Rishi Viswamitr his disciple community and the other rishis, King Janak along with the "Rajpurohit" (royal priest) Shatanand came to sacrifice cell for their reception. After respecting them appropriately and worshiping Vishwamitra properly King Janak said, "Hey Maharshi! By coming here, you have made the lives of all of us successful. Mithila has become a holy city by getting dust of your steps." Then looking at Ram and Lakshman he said, "Munivar! Who are these two incomparably handsome boys with you who are looking like cubs of lion? Seeing their heroic figures, it appears that they belongs to some royal family. Due to their presence, my sacrifice cell has become as bright as east direction at the time of sunrise. Kindly let us know who are they? Where from have they come? What is their father's name and to which descendant do they belong?"

In reply of his questions, Rishi Viswamitra said, "Hey King! Actually both of these children are the princes. They are son of King Dasharath of Ayodhya, the descendant of "Surya" (Sun). Their names are Ramchandra and Lakshman. Both of them are very powerful and heroic. In the terrible war they have destroyed Subahu, Tadka etc. Ram has thrown Marich, the demon with great strength, into hundred "yojan" away sea with his single arrow. I brought them from Ayodhya for safeguard of my sacrifice. I have provided them education related to various arms and weapons. With their efforts, my sacrifice concluded smoothly and successfully. They have amused the entire Rishi Ashram with their good behavior, respectfulness and cordiality. I've brought the here to show you great "Dhanushyajna" (bow sacrifice). "

Listening this episode, King Janak felt very happy and made proper arrangement for their stay.

Story of Ganga's Birth (2)

"When Sagar did not get any notice about his sons for many days, he ordered his stunning grandson Anshuaman to search his sons as well as the horse. Strenuous Anshuaman equipped himself with weapons walked toward inferno through the path made by his uncles. Respecting the Rishis who met in the way and asking about his uncles he reached to the place where the ashes of the burnt body of his uncles were lying. The horse was also there. Seeing the bodies of his uncles, he felt very sad. He searched for pond to perform "tarpan" (a ritual) but he did not get success. Then he saw there Garuda, maternal uncle. After giving him proper regards, he asked him about some lake. Garuda told him how his uncles misconducted and abused Kapil Muni and Kapil Muni devoured them all.

Then Garuda said to Anshuman that as all of his uncles were devoured by a divine man having supernatural power, mundane water can not be used for their "Tarpan", only the water of Ganga, the eldest daughter of the Himalayas, is required for it. Now you go back with the horse so that you can complete your grandfather's sacrifice. As directed by Garuda, Anshuman went back to his ग्रंद्फठेर in Ayodhya and told him all the story. King Sagar completed the sacrifice sad-heatedly. To absolve his sons, Sagar wanted to bring Ganga on Earth but he could not get any idea to make it possible.

Viswamitra continued, "After the death of king Sgar Amshuaman began to rule the state. His son Dilip was very aristocratic. When Dilip got adult, Anshuman handed over his state to him and went to Himalayas for penance to please Ganga but he could not get success and ultimately died. After ruling the state for a long time, Dilip also handed over the charge of state to his son Bhagirath, went to bring Ganga to the Earth by performing penance. He too could not get proper results. King Bhagirath did not get any child and finally he handed over his charge to his experienced knights went to a pilgrimage named Gokarna where he observed harsh austerity. Pleased with his unprecedented austerity, Lord Brahma asked to demand boon. Bhagirath asked him for bringing Ganga to the Earth. He also asked him for a child who will continue the descendant of Ikshwaku.

"Brahma said that your desire for child will fulfill shortly but there is a difficulty in bringing Ganga to the Earth. Nobody else except Lord has ability to manage the velocity of Ganga when she will fall from heaven to the Earth. So first of all make the Lord Shiva happy and ask him to be kind to you. After saying this, Lord Brahma went to his "loka" (place).

"Bhagirath observed atrocious penance again and as a result Lord Shiva was pleased. He became ready to manage the velocity of Ganga. Ganga had to leave the "Surlok" (place of gods) and fall to the Earth. At that time, she did not want to go anywhere from "Surlok", so she fell with a blusterous velocity considering to flow the Lord Shiva up to "Patal Lok" (inferno). Lord Shiva was already aware of her arrogance, so he entangled the currents of Ganga in his tresses. Even after all efforts, Ganga could not go out from his tresses.

"To release Ganga from tresses of Lord Shiva, Bhagirath agains observed austerity. Pleased with the penance, Lord Shankar released Ganga in Bindusar, a place located in the Himalayan mountain. Ganges divided into seven sections of currents. Three sections viz. Ahladini, Pawani and Nalini of Ganga streams were flown to the east. Antother three streams, Suchakshu, Sita and Sindhu (Indus) were flown to the west and the seventh stream followed Bhagirathi.

"Bhagirath was going going on and Ganga was following him. Here and there Devas (gods), Yakshas (demi-gods), Kinnars, Rishis, Munis etc. were gathering for reception of Ganga. People touching the water of Ganga were freed from worldly sins. Gnaga reached to the place where Rishi Jahnu was performing Yajna (sacrifice). The whold Yajnashala (place of performing sacrifice) flowed in the current of Ganga. As a result Rishi Jahnu felt angree and drunk all the water of Ganga. It was very strange for all the Rishis-Munis. They started praying Rishi Jahnu to release Ganga.

"Pleased with their praise, Rishi Jahnu allowed Ganga to come out through the way of his ear and accepted her as his daughter. Since then Ganga is called with the name Jahnavi. Then Ganga, behind Bhagirath, flowed up to the sea and from there she went to "Rasatal" (inferno) to absolve the sons of Sagarf. Touched with Ganga, all the sons of Sagar became sinless. From that day Ganga did have three names viz. Tripathga, Jahnavi and Bhagirathi.

"Hey Ramchandra! When Ganga reached to the Ashram of Kapil Muni, Lord Brahma blessed Bhagirath saying that due to the glory of your virtues the person, who will dring the water of Ganga or take bath in it, will be free from all type of sorrow and get heaven."

After the end of the tale, all of them went to relax.

Story of Ganga's Birth (1)

Rishi Viswamitra began to recite the legend, "There were two most beautyfull daughters, blessed with all virtues, of the Himalayas, the king of mountains. Mena, the daughter of Sumeru mountain, was their mother. Ganga and Uma were the name of elder and younger daughters respectively. Ganga was very impressive and having extraordinary qualities of the divine. She could not accept any bond and used to follow the arbitrarily routes. Impressed with her extraordinary talents the gods took her, with the permission of Himalayas, for welfare of the world. Uma, the second daughter of king of mountains, performed great rigor and got Lord Shiva as her husband."

Listening the words of Viswamitra Ram said, "Sir! When gods took Ganga to "Surloka" (place of gods - heavens), how she incarnated on the Earth and why she is called "Tripathga"?" The Rishi Viswamitr told, "Though Lord Shiva married with Uma but he did not get any child up to next hundred years. Once there came an idea for generation of a child to Lord Shiva. When gods including Lord Brahma knew about his idea, they started to consider that who will be able to refrain the glory of the Son of Shiva? They presented their doubt to Lord Shiva. As instructed by him Agni (the fire god) took this burden and Kartikey, having glory like fire, was born. As the gods conspired, Uma cursed them that they will not be able to become a father in the future. In the meantime, Uma met with Ganga in the heavens. Ganga told Uma that since a long time I have been wandering in the heavens and now it my desire to come to my motherland on the Earth. Uma assured Ganga that she will try to make some arrangement for it."

"Vats Ram! There was a king named Sagar in your own Ayodhyapuri. He did not have any son. Keshini, daughter of the king of Vidarbha state, was his "Patrani" (head queen). Keshini was beautiful, virtuous and straightaway. Sumati, daughter of king Arishtanemi, was second wife of king Sagar. Having a desire for getting son, king Sagar went to a place named Bhriguprasravan in Himalayas with his queens and started there penance. Pleased with his penance Rishi Bhrigu blessed him that he will get a lot of sons. One queen will have only son who will grow his descendants and the other queen will have sixty thousand sons. Both the queens should decide with mutual consultation that who wants one son and who wants sixty thousand sons. Keshini opted for one son who will grow their descendants and Sumati, sister of Garuda, decided to have sixty thousand strong sons.

"In appropriate time, a son named Asamanj was born from the womb of Keshini. A gourd came out from the womb of queen Sumati breaking which sixty thousand small sons came out. They were kept in oil pitchers for nourishment. Cycle elapsed and all the sons became young. Asmanj, the eldest son of Sagar, was very immorel and he enjoys throwing the children of the city into Sarjoo river. It made Sagar sad and he exiled Asmanj from state. There was a son of Asmanj whose name was Anshuman. Amshuaman was extremely moralist and powerful. One day there came an idea to king Sagar to perform "Ashwamegh Yajna" (a sacrifice). Very soon he acted on his idea."

Ram said to Rishi Viswamitra, "Gurudeva! I am keenly interested in listening the story of my ancestor Sagar's veneration. So, please complete the whole episode." Rishi Viswamitra continued, "King Sagar built a huge "Yajna Mandap" (place to perform sacrifice) on a green land situated in between the Himalayas and Vindhyachal. Then a "Shyamkarn" horse was left followed by mighty Anshuman and his army for safeguard. Feared from the future success of the sacrifice, Indra, king of gods, converted himself in form of demon and stolen the horse. On getting information about theft of horse, Sagar instructed his sixty thousand sons to get back the horse by arresting or killing the stealer. They searched the horse all over the world but could not get it back. Doubting that someone would hide the horse in any basement, all the sixty thousand sons of Sagar began to dig the Earth. Due digging of the Earth, innumerable creatures residing inside the Earth were killed. Digging continuously, they reached "Patalloka" (inferno). The gods complained about this heinous act to Lord Brahma. Brahma said that the princes were doing so as they had become blind in anger. Rishi Kapil will surely do something in the matter as he is responsible for safeguard of the Earth.

"Even after digging the entire earth, the horse could not be searched. They informed about this to their father Sagar. Indignant Sagar ordered to search the horse in inferno. In inferno they reached to the ashram of Kapil. They saw that Kapil was sitting with closed eyes and the horse was tied near him. They concluded that Kapil Muni is the stealer of the horse and, therefore, they abused and rushed to beat him. The "Samadhi" (trance) of Kapil dissolved due to this. Angry Kapil calcined all of them."

Deaparture for "Dhnush Yajna" (Bow Sacrifice)

Next day, the "Tapasvis" (sages) residing in the ashram to Ramchandra that the king Janak of Mithila has planned for "Dhanush Yajna" (bow sacrifice) in which kings from various states are to come for taking part. Ramchandra asked Guru Viswamitra, "Gurudeva! What is the purpose of that "Dhanush Yajna" and what are its specialties?" Rishi Viswamitra replied, "Ram! the name "janak" is a title for the kings of Mithilapuri being used since chronic age. Once upon a time, an ancestor of king of Mithila, named Devarat, arranged for a sacrifice with loyalty and devotion. He had invited the gods also in that sacrifice. Pleased with the sacrifice, gods provided him a bow named Pinak. That bow is most beautiful, proud worthy as well as very heavy and powerful. The strong and mighty warriors and experts of battle feel themselves to apply arrow on that bow, even can not pick it up. For "swayamvar" (a function where bride selects groom) of his only most beautiful daughter Sita, the King of Mithila has got affirmation that he will marry his daughter to the mighty and courageous prince who will apply arrow on that bow. A large number of the kings and the princes from may countries are coming to take part in "Dhanush Yajna". We also want to see this sacrifices. So, come on with us to go to Mithila. You will be happy to see sacrifice."

With the permission of Maharshi, Ram and Lakshman along with other Rishis walked toward Mithialhapuri. On the way they were observing the varieties of sceneries and periodically were discussing the spirituality. They reached to the banks of the "Shon" river. All the rishis including Vishwamitra, Ram and Lakshman took bath in the cool water of the river. Then, after performing "Sandhya-Upasana" (daily routine of worshiping God), they became busy in discussion of the religious stories. They took rest there with the permission of Guru as it was late night.

Next day morning, the community started journey. Going on continuously they reached the most sacred river Ganges. It was mid day at that time and the sun was shining in the middle of the sky. The scene of Ganges was looking most lovely. A number of reflections of the sun were appearing in the waves of Ganges. Beautiful fishes were swiming in the water of Ganges, sweet birds like swans, cranes were making pleasent voice. The golden sand particles were lying scattered all around and the coastal trees were producing eye-feasting views.

Ram was watching that view very eagerly. Viswamitra asked to him, "Vats (Son)! What are you seeing so intently?" Ram said, "Gurudeva! I am watching the wonderful luster of "Sursari" (river of gods - Ganges). My heart is getting unprecedented peace just with the vision of the most sacred river. Sir! I want to hear how this sacred river, which washes out all the sins, was originated?" Viswamitra said, "Ram! There is a most interesting and entertaining story about the origin of Ganges. I am going to tell you all this tale."

Slaughter of Marich and Subahu

Next day, getting up in "Brahm-Muhurt" (early in the morning before sunrise) and after finishing the morning routines, Ram and Lakshman went to Viswamitra and said, "Gurudeva! Please tell us about the time at which the monsters used to come to disturb your sacrifice. We want to know it because we don't want to give any chance to demons to come here and start violence. "

All the Rishis and Munis, who were present there, felt very pleased by hearing from the brave sons of king Dashrath and said, "Hey Princes! You have to be full alert and careful for the next six days and nights for safeguard of sacrifice. Rishi Vishwamitra will perform the sacrifice silently. He will not answer any of your questions as he has taken ordination for the sacrifice."

Getting this information, both the brothers Ram and Lakshman equipped with their weapons and got ready for the defense of the sacrifice. They were defending the sacrifice cautiously without taking any rest, but there was no any kind of disturbance in first five days and nights. On start of sixth day, Ram said to Lakshman, "Brother Soumitra (son of Sumitra)! Today is the final day to complete the sacrifice and hence there is full chance of violence by demons. We need to be very cautious. A bit of carelessness might cause the sacrifice unsuccessful."

Ram Laxman had just completed his words, the sacrifice materials started to burn with flames. They heard sound like a thunder after cracking of hundreds of clouds. After then, the demonic forces of Marich and Shubahu began to rain blood, meat, marrow, bones, etc. Ram saw the army of the elusive monsters in the sky. He said to Laxman, "Laxman! get ready with your bow and get careful. Now I am going to destroy the forces of these demons applying "Manavastra" (a special weapon)."

Displaying extraordinary of skills and smartness, Ram quickly left the Manavastra on them. Due to stroke of Manavastra on his chest, Marich fled with the velocity of the typhoon and fell in the sea which was four hundred "Yojans" (a yojan = six miles) away from there. Then, Ram threw "Agneyastra" (a special weapon) in the sky which resulted a terrible blaze of fire encircling Subahu. The flame of fire burnt the great sinner (Subahu) and he died instantly. Falling of his dead body on the Earth caused a big loud explosion. Then Ram left a weapon named "Wayavya". Due to the hit of that weapon the huge army of monsters were killed and their dead bodies began to fall on the ground like hail. In a short time the whole demonic army was destroyed.

There started cheering and raining of flowers. On completion of the sacrifice without disturbance, Rishi Vishwamitra hugged Ram with his heart and said, "Hey lotus of Raghukul! I got success in my sacrifice due to your strength and skills. You have realy obliged this Siddhashrama by destruction of riotous demons"

Vishwamitra's Ashram

Hearing the words of Ram, Viswamitra said, "Hey Vats (son)! It really is the ashram and its name is Siddhashrama." Laxman asked, "Gurudeva! Why does it called with the name Siddhashrama?" In response to the question of Laxman Viswamitra said, "In this regard a story is prevalent. In ancient days a demon named Bali planned to perform a greate "yajna" (sacrifice) here. Bali was very powerful and brave. He had defeated all the gods. On completion of the "yajna" definitely his strength was going to be increased. Considering this Devaraj (king of gods) Indra was very scared. Indra, with all the gods, went to Lord Vishnu and prayed him in humble voice, "Hey Trilokpaty (Lord of three regions)! King Bali has defeated all the gods and now he is planning for a huge sacrifice. He is a great donater and very generous. No mendicant returns empty handed from his door. Entire universe is afraid of his generosity, penance and good deeds. On completion of the planned sacrifice he will be able to be king of gods. Domination of a demon on gods' kingdom is against the tradition of gods. So hey Lord! I request you to take measures so that his sacrifice can not be completed " After hearing his prayers Lord Vishnu said, "All of you gods be fearless and intrepid and go back to your "Dhams" (places). To complete your desire I will departure of here soon."

"When the gods went away, Lord Vishnu converted himself into form of dwarf and reached the place where the sacrifice was being performed. King Bali was very impressed with the dwarf Brahmin, he said, "Hay Brahmin! Please welcome. Please tell me, what can I do for you?" Lord Vishnu in the form of dwarf said, "King! I only need two and a half steps of ground where I can sit and praises to God." King Bali accepted the demand of dwarf Brahmin with pleasure and allowed him to measure the ground with steps. On getting permission Lord Vishnu coverted into huge form and measured the whold sky in one step and the earth along with the abyss in second step. The he asked to the king Bali, "King! now tell me where is the place for my remaining half step?"

Any of the mendicants had never been disappointed by the king Bali. He did not want to return this mendicant without fulfilling his desire. He, therefore, said, "O Brahman! My body is still remaining unmeasured by you, please put your half step on it." Lord Vishnu did so. That was such a sacrifices and generosity which pleased Lord Vishnu and he said in blessing, "this place will always regarded as sacred, and will be named as Siddhashrama. Person performing here austerity will very soon get success."

Since then, this place is known as Siddhashrama and number of Rishis-Munis get forgiveness by performing penance here. My ashram is also here. I want to do "yajna" at this place only. Whenever I began the "yajna", the demons hurdled and I could never complete it. Now I'll certainly be able to complete my sacrifice as you have come.

Talking with Ram and Lakshman Viswamitra entered in his Ashrams. All the Rishis and munis and their pupils, who used to live there, expressed their hospitality to them. Ram said in humble voice to Guru Vishwamitra, "Muniaraj! kindly start your auspious "yajna" today. I assure you that defending your "yajna" I will make this sacred territory free from demons." Listening the words of Ram Viswamitra started to mobilize the content for the sacrifice.

Unattainable gift of weapons

On the way at the shore of a picturesque lake Vishwamitra stopped and said to Ram, "Hey Ram! You have done the big public welfare work by slaughtering Tadka. I am pleased much with your work and cleverness and hence providing you some rare weapons. Slaughter of Tadka

In the morning Ram and Lakshman reached to the cost of the river. On seeing two lovely boys with Vishwamitra and getting their introduction, the "Munis" (sages) of that forest brought small boat and said to Vishwamitra, "Hey Muniaraj (king of munis)! Please cross the river with the princes using this boat." Vishwamitra expressed his thanks to them and, with Ram and Lakshman, crossed the river which was eagerly flowing to meet the sea. Across the river there was a terrible forest. Seeing the Forest Ram said, "Gurudeva! How horrible is this forest! Wild animals like Lions, tigers, elephants etc. are making voices in all the directions. The sunlight can not dare to penetrate the darkness due to denseness of this forest. What's the name of this very difficult forest?"

Vishwamitra replied, "Hey Raghav (another name of Ram)! At a time instead of this terrible forest there were two prosper states here the name of which were Karup and Malda. The states were having big residences, more than sufficient money and well maintained roads. Traders from various states used to come there for business purpose. But a "Yaksh" (demigod) girl, named Tadka, destroyed those states. Tadka is not an ordinary woman. She is wife of the demon Sund and mother of the demon Marich. She is very strong and powerful having strength equivalent to the strength of thousand elephants in her body. After destroying the states she and her son Marich killed and devoured all the people there. Now due to their fear nobody can dare to come here. If by mistake somebody comes here, he can never go back alive. I have brought you here for the slaughter of Tadka. "

Surprised Ram asked, "Gurudeva! How Tadka got the strength of thousand elephants? Definitely there is some secret, as generally the women are so soft and vulnerable." Viswamitr said, "Vats (Son)! You are correct. In fact there is a mystery behind this. At a time there was a Herculean "yaksha" (demigod) named Suketu. He was childless. He performed austerity of Lord Brahma to get child. Pleased with his penance Brahma gave him blessing and as a result birth of Tadka took place. Suketu also got blessing of Brahma for marvelous strength of Tadka and she got strength of thousand elephants. When Tadka got suitable age for marriage Suketu married her with a demon named Sund and Marich was born. Like his mother Marich also was strong and powerful. Even being the son of Sund (a demon) he was not a demon since his childhood he was very unruly. He used to torture the Rishis and Munis unnecessarily. Being sad due to his torture Agast Muni cursed him to be demon. Sund became very angry and ran to kill Agast Muni as his son converted into a demon due to his curse. Rishi Agust immediately burnt him into ashes by cursing him. To avenge the death of her husband for Tadka pounced to Agast Muni. As a result Rishi Agast cursed her also and she became ugly as her beauty was destroyed due to his curse. Tadka has resolved to destroy the ashram of Agast Muni to to avenge her ugliness as well as the death of her husband. So, Ram! I command you to slaughter Tadka. Nobody else can kill her, only you can slaughter her. Do not think that she is woman and I should not kill her. She is a felony in form of woman and to destroy felony is not a sin. Leave all the hesitation and slaughter Tadka. This is my order."

Ram said, "Gurudeva! Your permission is acceptable to me. I definitely will kill Tadka for the welfare of the people." After saying that Ram made "tankar" (loud sound of bow) by pulling the string of his bow up to the ear. The sound echoed thought the forest province and scared wild animals ran away around. Due to unprecedented commotion Taka became very angry. When she saw Ram ready with his bow, she thought that this strange boy wants to dominate my entire empire and went mad with anger. She speedily pounced for invasion on Ram. Seeing her action, Ram said to Lakshman, "Look brother! This female demon having hideous face like giant palm trees is how ugly. Just seeing her face, it appears that she is very violent and enjoys killing innocuous living-beings and drinking their blood. Please be aside carefully and see how will I send her to hell."

Showing her big teeth and expanding her hands, hideous bodied Tadka ran with lightning-fast speed toward Ram and Lakshman. Ram was ready for this terrible attack, he sieved her heart applying his arrow. A current of hot blood flowed from her chest. Without giving any more chance for attack to her, Ram left another arrow which rooted into her chest. Suffering from dizziness she fell to the ground died immediately. Seeing fighting skills of Ram and death of Tadka Viswamitr felt very happy. He blessed Ramchandra by heart.

With the order of Guru all took night rest there. Next day morning they found that the forest was freed from terror, fearfulness and awfulness due to the death of Tadka. For some time they enjoyed the beauty of that forest and then, after completing the daily routines, they started to walk towards ashram of Vishwamitra.

Kamdeva's (Cupid's) Ashram

Other days Muni (sage) Vishwamitra got up in "Brahma-Muhurta" (early in mornning before arise of sun) and said Ram and Laxman, who were sleeping on beds made from gross, "Hey Ram and Lakshman! Get up. Night has been expired. God "Bhuvan-Bhaskar" (god sun) will shortly arise in east direction. As he demolishes the darkness spreading light in all directions, you also will have to destroy demons using your valour. Be free from your daily routiene and do "Sandhya-Upasana" (parying and worshiping god). Perform "Agnihotra" (sacrificing grains to fire) to please the gods. Leave lethargy and get up now as this is not the time to sleep."

Getting instructions from Guru both the brothers left the beds and after finishing their daily routine like bath etc. walked towards cost of Ganges along with the "Munivar" (great sage). They reached at the confluence of the Ganges and Sarjoo. At that place there were beautiful and peaceful ashrams of "Rishis", "Munis" and "Tapasvees" (types of sages). Seeing one of the most beautiful Ashram, Ramchandra asked the Guru Vishwamitra, "Hey Guruwar! Who lives in this most attractive ashram?" In response to the question of Ram "Muni" told, "Hey Ram! This is a special ashram. Once upon a time Kailashpaty (master of Kailash mountain) Lord Shiva performed here atrocious penance. Seeing his penance the entire world was distracted up. Devraj (king of gods) Indra became fearful and decided to dissolve his penance. For the work he appointed Kamdeva (Cupid). One by one Kamdeva left several arrows to Lord Shankar which interrupted his penance. Enraged Lord Shankar opened his third Eye. Kamdeva ignited by the blaze of the third Eye and converted into ashes. Being a god Kamdeva did not die but his "Anga" (body) decayed. As his body (anga) was destroyed, he was named as "Ananga". This place is called "Angadesh" because this event took place at this location. This is ashram of Lord Shiva. As Kamdeva was inflamed here the Lord Shiva, this ashram is also known as "Kamdeva's (Cupid's) Ashram."

As per the instructions of Guru Vishwamitra all of them decided to take night rest there. Ram and Lakshman, both the brothers, collected "Kanda-Mool-Fala" (eatable bulbs, roots and fruits of vegitables) from forest and dedicated to the sage. With the Guru, both the brothers also ate the collected items considering that as boon. After completing the bath and worship, Ram and Lakshman listened variety of stories and religious discourse told by Vishwamitra. Finally, after providing appropriate services to Guru and getting permission from him, they laid down to their gross beds pronouncing the holy "Gayatri Mantra".

The advent of Maharshi Viswamitra

Emperor Dashrath was in his court. Guru Vashishth and other knights were sitting on appropriate seats. Maharaj said to Guru Vashishtha, "Hey, Gurudeva! Life is fleeting and my age is increasing. Ram, Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughan all the four brothers are now adults. It is my desire that the marriage of these princes should be arranged before I die. I, therefore, request you to kindly arrange to search eligible brides for them." As soon as Emperor finished his talk, the gatekeeper reported about advent of the sage Viswamitra. King Dashrath himself went to the door, praised Viswamitra and brought inside the court honorably. Sage Vishwamitra was appropriately honored and provided seat with guru Vashishth.

After completion of general formalities, Emperor Dashrath said in polite voice to the sage Vishwamitra, "Hey Munishrasht! (greatest sage) I feel myself luckey to see you and my court as well as the whole Ayodhyapuri is blessed by your advent and getting the dust from your steps. Now, please tell me about the purpose for coming here. providing you any kind of service will be great pleasure for me ."

After hearing the king's humble words, sage Viswamitr said, "Hey king! Your words are in total conformity with the dignity of your descendant. Descendants of Ikshwaku have always been devoted and faithful to cows, Brahmins and sages. I have come here for a special purpose or in clear words I have come to ask for somthing from you. If you give me your words that you will will certainly fulfill my demand then only I will keep my demand before you. If you do not give me your words, I will go back without demanding anything."

I know that you are religious, favourable to Rishi munis (sages) and lover of your people. I ask you for your eldest son Ram who will save my yajna from demons and let me complete my purpose without any disturbance. I am well aware of the fact that Ram will easily kill both of them. hence please let me take Ram with me for about ten days. As soon as I complete my work, I will send back him safely to you."

Hearing the words of Viswamitra, Dashrath plunged into gloom. He just felt that he will be unconcious. Then keeping control on self, he said, "Munivar (great sage)! Ram is just a child. It will not be possible for him to face Demons. I myself am ready to go for defending your yajna (sacrifice)." Viswamitra said, "King! You do not have to doubt that Ram can not face them. I have already guessed about his powers using my Yogbal (power of yoga) Please be fearless and allow Ram to go with me."

The king Dashrath replied, "Hey Munishrasht! Ram has so far not seen Maya-Prpnchon (deception) of demons and he does not have any experience of this type of war. Moreover, I have never separated him from me since the time of his birth. I will die without him. I request you to kindly give me permission to go with you along with my army."

Vishwamitra became angry as king Dashrath was deterring his promise due to affection to his son. He said, "King! I did not know that the kings of Raghukul have been changed now and they do not be firm in their promise. If I'd known this fact, I'd have never come here. I am going now." As he finished the words, his face to become red with rage.

All the knights, court people etc. were afraid of any kind of unwilling incident due to anger of Vishwamitra. Guru Vashishtha explained to the king, "Hey Rajan (King)! Please do not disgrace the dignity of Raghukul and integrity of your promise in illusory of your son. I advise you forget that Ram is merely a child and allow him to go with Vishwamitra. The great sage is extreme scholar and expert in all type of weapons. With Vishwamintra Ram is fully safe and there will never be chance of any type of injury to him. Moreover, with Rishi Vishwamitra, Ram will become expert in all types of weapons also.

Guru Vashishth's words convinced Dashrath and he called Ram there. Lakshman also came there along with Ram. King Dashrath ordered Ram to go with Rishi Vishwamitra. Accepting the father's order Ram got ready to go with Rishi Vishwamitra. Lakshman requested Vishwamitra to take him also with Ram and prayed to his father for getting his permission. After getting permission and blessings from elders, Ram and Lakshman walked with Vishwamitra.

Ram and Lakshman, having quivers on their shoulders, were following Vishwamitra with tardy steps. It was looking like Ashwinikumars (sons of god Ashwini) are going with Lord Brahma. Ram and Lakshman were full of marvelous splendor, wearing gloves made from the skin of iguana, having bow in their hand and sharp edged saber on their waists. It appeared that the bravery itself was going in the form of them.

They reached to the banks of holy river Sarjoo after walking a distance of six kos (a kos is equal to one and half mile). Sage Vishwamintra said in lovely voice, "Hey Wats (son)! Now you get away from fatigue by taking bath in Sarjoo. Then I'll give you training. First of all I will teach you attainments named "Bala" and "Atibala". When Ram expressed curiosity about these attainments, Rishi Vishmitra told, "Both of these attainments are extraordinary. Experts in these come under best person in the world. Scholars say that these are the origin of all attainments. Being expert in these, you will be able to control your hunger and thirst. These brilliant attainments were created by Lord Brahma. I am offering these to you as I know you deserve them."

After Ram and Lakshman had taken bath, Viswamitra provided initiation of attainments. On getting initiation, the faces of Ram and Lakshman brightened marvelously. All of them took rest near the banks of Sarjoo by sleeping on bed made from grass.

Birth of Ram, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughna

As ordered by the king, the knights and servants left Shyamkarn horse along with Chaturangini Sena (army). The king Dashrath invited all the friars, scholars, sages and thoughtful persons from all parts of the country to join and make success the yajna. At appropriate time king Dashrath came to yajnashala with his Guru Vashishtha, Rishi Shringi (who was best friend of the king and resident of Anga Desh) and all other guests from various countries. Thus the formal opening of the great yajna (sacrifice) was done. The whole atmosphere was echoed with loud sound of Richas (stanzas) of the Vedas and the yajnashala

The yajna ended with donations of appropriate funds, grains, cows etc. to all Brahmins, saints and scholars by king Dashrath. The boon of the yajna was brought to palace of the king and distributed among the three queens. Using the boon and the grace of God resulted the pregnancy of the three wives.

On shukla paksh navami tithi of Chaitra (ninth day of bright fortnight of Chaitra), when the Sun, the Mars, the Saturn, the Venus and the Jupiter were seated in their high places in the Punarhwashu constellation and the Cancer ascendant just arised, a baby born from the womb of the eldest queen Kaushalya. The baby was very glorious, bright and amazing handsome having attractive complexion. Thereafter in good constellation and auspicious time, one son from Kaikeyi and two sons from third queen Sumitra were born.

The entire state began to celebrate the birth of four sons of king Dashrath. Gandharvas began to sing, Apssaras (elf) began to dance and gods, sitting on their vimans (aircrafts), began to throw flowers. King donated whole heartedly to the bards, Brahmins, and the beggers who came to his door to bless him. The naming ceremony was performed by Guru Vashishtha and the names of the four sons were kept as Ramchandra, Bharat, Laxman and Shatrughan.

With the progression of age Ramchandra got various good qualities and became most popular among the people of Ayodhya. He was genius having enormous talents and as a result he became expert in all subjects. Very shortly he gained the extraordinary skills in applying all types of weapons, riding on elephants, horses and all types of vehicles. He engaged himself in service of the mother, the father and the other elders. Remaining three brothers also followed him. All the four brothers had faith in their elders and love for each other. Emperor Dashrath remained filled up with the pride and joy to see his four sons.

Start of Story

Kaushal Pradesh, which was founded by Vaivaswat Manu, is located on the banks of sacred the river Sarjo. The beautiful and prosperous city Ayodhya is the capital of the state. The descendant of Vaivaswat Manu consists of many warriors, powerful, talented and celebrated kings. King Dashrath was also one of them. Dashrath was scholar of the Vedas, religious, merciful, brave and great king. People in his state were free from sorrow, solemn and god-fearing. His state was free from any type of aversion.

One day the king Dashrath saw in mirror a white hair among black hairs. He thought that the days of my youth have come to its end and still Iam childless. How will my descendant continue and what will happen to my state? Thus, he considered to do "Puatryeshty Yajna" (a religious deed) to get children. He told about his resolution of "Puatryeshty" to his Guru Vashishtha and requested him to guide in the matter.

Knowing about his ideas and considering it right and reasonable Guru vashishth said, "Hey king! I also believe that your wishes will certainly be fulfilled by performing Puatryeshty Yajna. Please, therefore, arrange for Ashwamedh Yajna at your earliest and leave a Shyamkarn horse for it." As instructed by Guru Vashishtha, king Dashrath built a lovely Yajnashala (place to perform yajna) in the northern coast of river Sarjoo and ordered his servants to make all necessary arrangements. Then king went to his palace and told about the auspicious news of performing yajna to his wives as a result all the wives felt much happy.
